With AI moving faster than ever, a lot of students (and their parents!) are getting nervous about which careers will actually be safe in 10–15 years. If you’re planning to study overseas, picking the “right” degree feels more important than it ever has.
A really interesting new report from the site willrobotstakemyjob.com (combined with course-fee data from IDP’s database of over 250,000 programs) looked at three big things:
– How likely is the job to be automated?
– How much does it pay?
– Will there still be demand for it in the future?
They also pulled in official labour stats from Australia, the US, Canada, and the UK to make sure the numbers hold up.
The big takeaway? Healthcare is still king when it comes to AI-proof careers.
Jobs that need deep human connection, complex judgment, empathy, and hands-on skills are basically untouchable by robots—at least for the foreseeable future. And the pay? Pretty spectacular.
Here are some of the top ones (especially at the undergrad/master’s level that international students often aim for):
– Physician Assistants
– Nurse Practitioners
– Dentists
– Physicists
– Nurse Midwives
– Physical Therapists
For example, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says nurse practitioner jobs are projected to grow a massive 46.3% by 2031, and physician assistant roles aren’t far behind at 28.5%. That’s insane growth.
Yes, studying medicine, dentistry, or any of these advanced healthcare paths abroad can be expensive (sometimes eye-wateringly so), but the return on investment is hard to beat. We’re talking median U.S. salaries that start around $100,000 for physical therapists and climb all the way up to $236,000+ for specialist physicians like urologists or rehab doctors.
So if you’re trying to choose a degree that gives you both job security and a seriously good paycheck in the age of AI, healthcare is still very much at the top of the list.
