The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) has announced sponsorship opportunities for needy girls in studying engineering courses at craft and diploma levels.
According to an announcement published on Wednesday, September 25, the initiative seeks to reduce gender disparity in technical engineering courses.
“NITA sponsors 25 Kenyan female students from needy backgrounds annually to pursues engineering courses at craft and diploma level in an effort to reduce gender disparity in technical courses as part of its Corporate Social Investment,” the statement by NITA read in part.
The programme was started in 2006 and approximately 400 young female students from across the country have benefitted so far.
The Authority has since invited applications from Kenyan female students who have a passion and interest to enroll for technical courses in the levels highlighted. The opportunity is exclusively for students from the Arid and Semi-Arid lands (ASAL) areas.
NITA went on to list the specific marginalised areas which include: Mandera, Turkana, Lamu, West Pokot, Kwale, Ijara, Tana River, Garissa, Isiolo, Marshabit, Samburu, Elgeyo-Market, Suba, Kajiado, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Teso, Mt. Elgon, Kitui, Mwingi, Tharaka, Mbere, Transmara, Makueni, Kuria, and Baringo.
As per the advertisement, successful applicants will be sponsored in various Public Technical Training Institutions in the country commencing May 2025.
The training opportunities offered by the Authority are clustered in the following disciplines.
- Mechanical Engineering
- Agricultural Engineering
- Electrical/Electronics
- Automotive
- Surveying
- Building/Civil Engineering
NITA’s Eligibility Criteria
Those interested should be willing to learn and possess an aptitude towards a technical career in addition to the outlined minimum academic requirements: –
Diploma-KCSE-Minimum Mean Grade of C (Plain), with at least C+ (Plus) in Mathematics, C (Plain) in Physics and English
Craft-KCSE-Minimum Mean Grade of D+ (Plus), with at least C- (Minus0 in Mathematics, D+ (Plus) in Physics and English.
How to Apply NITA Sponsorship
The Authority has given guidelines on how to apply, noting that the applications are strictly for female students who meet the above requirements and are from the ASAL areas stated earlier.
The female candidates who qualify should apply by following these steps:
- Submit a handwritten justification of not more than three hundred words indicating why they deserve the training and the sponsorship.
- Attach copies of certificates, testimonials and identity card.
- Select any two courses from the clusters listed.
- Use the guidelines available on the website at nita,go.keand submit the same to the Director General, National Industrial Training Authority, P.O. Box 74494-00200, Nairobi, or Email femaleeengineers@nita.go.ke on or before October 30, 2024.
Parsons living with Disability are also encouraged to apply.
The Authority further warns that late applications will not be considered.
