Kenya Education Fund (KEF) has received a donation worth Sh.10 million from Prudential Life Assurance Kenya (PLAK) towards supporting less privileged learners.
The fund shall be used not only to assist KEF economically disadvantaged students to improve their lives through scholarships and provide educational resources but also for Covid-19 relief purposes.
Speaking at a Nairobi hotel, the Kenya Education Fund (KEF) Country Director, Dominic Muasya, said, this year’s application just ended two weeks ago, after selecting about 160 students who are joining Form One out of 986 students, who were shortlisted.
“We are happy to have found partners like Prudential who have been generous not only giving us money, but also the opportunity to interact with other partners of prudential, who share experiences and knowledge with the scholars,” said Muasya.
Muasya added that the students supported by Prudential Kenya are most remarkable and most deserving of the opportunity because of their financial background and also the potential they have in their studies.
In her remarks, Prudential Life Assurance Kenya (PLAK), Chief Executive Director, Gwen Kinisu, said that this partnership will provide a financial cushion for the families who suffer loss of income and are unable to pay school fees for their children, due to the adverse effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Prudential Kenya has been working closely with the Kenya Education Fund, to fund the education of financially disadvantaged high school students from all over Kenya over the last eight years. We have supported educational programs and projects focused on allowing vulnerable children to access quality education,” said Kinisu.
She noted that the pandemic uncovered the reality of inequality that greatly affected scholars, many of whom live in marginalized parts of the country, and during the period when schools were closed due to the pandemic, had little or no access to the digital tools required to continue learning virtually.
Prudential Kenya has in the past partnered with KEF to educate over 100 students through high school all the way to university from 2014 to 2018.
