10,000 to Gain Marketable Skills at Open University of Kenya via Equity-Huawei Collaboration


The Open University of Kenya (OUK), Huawei and Equity Group Foundation have partnered in a move that will see at least 10,000 students earn certifications at the Huawei ICT Academy.

In a statement on Friday, May 16, OUK said the initiative aims to equip students with industry-relevant ICT skills and Huawei professional certifications in Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, and Coding.

 Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao handed over the Huawei ICT Academy plaque to the Vice Chancellor of the OUK, Prof. Elijah Omwenga.

“This partnership exemplifies our shared commitment to nurturing digital talent in Kenya. Together with Equity Group Foundation and the Open University of Kenya, we’re not just investing in infrastructure we are investing in people,” Gao said.

Boost for Open University of Kenya 

Dr. James Mwangi, who is the Chancellor of OUK, and the Executive Chairman of Equity Group Foundation graced the occasion.

Mwangi stated that the involvement of the Equity Group Foundation underscores its long-lasting relationship and commitment to inclusive growth through education.

“Through this collaboration with Huawei and the Open University of Kenya, we are scaling access to global tech skills, particularly for young people who might otherwise be left out of the digital revolution. We’re building the workforce of tomorrow — one that is inclusive, innovative, and equipped to transform Kenya and Africa,” Mwangi said.

Further, he added that the Huawei ICT Academy at the Open University of Kenya will offer courses in key areas like networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

Additionally, with content aligned to global standards and delivered online, students from Kenya and beyond will become to innovators and lead the digital economy.

“The Huawei ICT Academy at the Open University of Kenya will offer courses in key areas such as networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

With content aligned to global standards and delivered online, students from all over Kenya — and beyond — will benefit from flexible, world-class ICT training. We aim to reach over 10,000 learners with skills that will enable them to innovate, compete, and lead in the digital economy,” he explained.

About Huawei ICT Academy, Equity Foundation and OUK 

Huawei ICT Academy is a global initiative by Huawei Technologies that partners with educational institutions to deliver industry-leading ICT training and certification programs.

Launched in 2013, the academy aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry by equipping students with practical skills in areas such as networking, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

Equity Foundation Scholarships

On the other hand, Equity Group Foundation (EGF) was established in 2008 as the social arm of Equity Group Holdings.
