Department of Agriculture and Environment


About Department

The Agriculture and Environmental Science department offers three courses at Diploma level, namely Diploma in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development, Diploma in Agriculture and Diploma in Environmental Science. The department is in process of developing a course in Fishing technology in partnership with our Canadian partners. The course will be a market driven Competency Based Education and training (CBET) in Fishing Technology. CBET is a methodology used to deliver technical and vocational education and training) with the aim of improving the Blue economy. To ensure this, the department is also working with the industry in Curriculum development to ensure that the graduates we produce are a perfect fit for what the market demands.

Department of Building and Civil Engineering


Welcome to the Department of Building and Civil Engineering. I invite you to learn more about our programs and opportunities for Higher National Diploma, Diploma, Craft Certificate, Artisan courses and CBET courses. We have a long and successful history of educating future Technologists, Technicians and Craftsmen, thanks to the trainers and Technicians of our department, many of whom are regionally and nationally recognized for their contributions to the engineering construction industry. We welcome intellectually motivated, creative and diverse individuals to our Higher National Diploma, Diploma, Craft Certificate education and research programs.

Department of Business and Entrepreneurship Studies


DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVE
The department has an objective of ensuring 100% syllabus coverage within the specified period as well as achieving a 100% pass in all external exams.
To achieve this the department has embarked on an elaborate programme to professionalize the department by having students undertake professional courses and accounting packages alongside their primary courses.
The institutions is a centre for KASNEB Courses.

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering


The department has three main sections, namely:

  • Electrical Power
  • Telecommunication
  • Mechatronics

The courses offered at the department are at Artisan, Craft Certificate, Diploma and Higher National Diploma examined by the Kenya National Examination Council(KNEC)  and Curriculum Development Assessment and Certification Council (CDACC). Most of our programs are offered in Full-time and some in part-time and evening/weekends. The department has thirty five trainers, four technicians and a population of over 900 trainees. We have fully embraced the modular syllabus for both certificate and Diploma courses in Electrical Engineering and the Competent-Based Education and Training (CBET) for both level 4, 5 and 6 in Electrical Engineering

Department of Health Sciences


The health science department is among the newly established academic departments in The Kisumu National Polytechnic. It’s responsible for training professional Pharmaceutical Technologists, Medical Laboratory Technologists, and Nutrition and Dietetics Technologists. Health science works in collaboration with medical facilities within the region to meet the needs of the job market. The courses offered are fully accredited by relevant professional bodies: Pharmacy and Poisons Board, Kenya Nutrition and Dieticians Institute, and Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board. The department offers patient patient-centered approach to learning by accessing the institution’s dispensary which offers healthcare services to the immediate stakeholders. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories for practical, research and training. The department has sufficient lecture rooms and qualified teaching and non-teaching staff. Internet facilities are available for learning and research.

Department of Computer and Informatics


THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTING AND INFORMATICS

The department was formerly known as Maths/Computer. It was established back in 1996 as a service department to offer training services to other Engineering departments in the areas of ICT and Mathematics. The department later mounted its own courses in 1998 and started offering Diploma in Applied statistics, Diploma in Computer studies and Short-term Computer application Courses. Later in 2001, the department introduced mainstream courses in ICT such as Diploma in ICT and Certificate in ICT. The department has made several achievements in the Last ten years, Since the introduction of the mainstream Courses in ICT. The students’ enrolment has improved tremendously from a previous low number of 125 in 2007 to over 700 students in 2019. The department is working in collaboration with stakeholders from the industry to ensure that all our Courses are aligned to the requirements of the Job market. We proudly recognize ICT to be one of the fastest growing and dynamic service industries in the Country, and therefore, there is need to keep up-to-date with the technology used in the industry to ensure that our graduates have a seamless transition from College to the Job market.

Department of Institutional and Hospitality Management


The department of Hospitality, Institutional Management and Fashion Design offers Diploma, Certificate, Artisan and Short courses. The department has over the years equipped trainees with knowledge and skills which have given them an upper hand in the job market. The Hospitality and Institutional Management Section has produced well sought after graduates due to their mastery of skills acquired in the training. TKNP is the Regional Flagship TVET Institute for Textile Technology (RFTITT) under the component of strengthening selected Regional Flagship TVET Institutes for high quality skills development in priority sectors. In the Fashion Design Section, through the East Africa skills for transformation and regional flagship project (EASTRIP), the Fashion and Design section together with industry experts have developed twelve Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) courses in textile technology which are market driven .The department is equipped with forty two qualified staff and currently the trainee population is at one thousand four hundred. The department has an income generating unit –Guest house and Garment production unit. The department is in the process of developing curricula for Hairdressing operation, Event management and Tannery and Leather Technology courses.

Department of Mechanical Engineering


The Mechanical Engineering department is one of flagship departments at The Kisumu National Polytechnic. It is among the departments that are as old as the institution that started as Technical Secondary School in 1967. The department has undergone several transformations in its life as a technical training provider. Mechanical engineering department has three major sections; Production option Engineering, Plant option Engineering and Automotive option engineering. The department has improved its training facilities over the years, especially in Mechanical Engineering production and plant options with the state-of-the art equipment. This has enhanced the training to conform to the dynamic technology in most industries around the globe. The department has witnessed growth in terms of physical facilities, courses as well as in personnel. In terms of personnel, the department has a total of 30 trainers of which seventeen trainers are under the Public Service Commission of Kenya employment and thirteen are employed by the Kisumu National Polytechnic governing council. Besides, the department has five technicians who assist in the training and man the workshops within the department. The department boasts of well-equipped workshops in which all the practical lessons are conducted, an ICT laboratory from which the students can access the internet and from where subjects such as autoCAD are conducted, a smart classroom from which simulated learning programs are installed, Refrigeration and Air conditioning workshop, well equipped hydraulics and Pneumatics laboratory and an industrial boiler/steam plant among others. The department is currently offering both TVET and CDACC programs in all its regular courses (full-time courses). The department in partnership With KEFEP (Kenya Education for Employment Program), Curriculum Development and Assessment Certification Council (CDACC), Colleges and Institutes Canada (CiCAN), Industrial Advisory Council (IAC) and other stakeholders developed occupational standards and curriculum in plant operations and maintenance for levels four to Six. This program was approved by CDACC and launched on the 15th February, 2021 and is currently being implemented. Therefore, the experience as a trainee in the mechanical Engineering department will equip you with the relevant knowledge and competencies and impact your career positively.
